What is SPIRALDYNAMIK®?

Spiraldynamik® is a combination of the art and science of anatomically correct movement.  Like a "user's manual " to the body, it enhances our understanding of body function by explaining the physics of human movement, given the laws of nature (gravity) and the human anatomical structure.  It is an anatomically based movement and therapy concept put together by a group of researchers from different fields; medicine, physiotherapy, sport, dance and pedagogy, to name a few.

Founded twenty years ago in Zürich by Dr. Christian Larsen and the physiotherapist Yolande Deswarte, Spiraldynamik® is now used in many different fields to understand and improve the mechanics of human movement.  Not only can certain medical operations be avoided through the understanding of the body alignment., but athletes and dancers can perform with improved technique and lower risk to injury.  School teachers, too, can help children with attention deficits to improve concentration through the understanding and adjusting of the body's posture.

The spiral, as a principle of organisation, is found everywhere in nature.  Plants grow in spirals.  Galaxies are born in spirals.  Tornadoes, whirlpools, cyclones and other weather patterns follow this same principle of organisation.   This spiral form provides movement and stability at the same time.

Our bodies are also formed around this same organizational principle.  The foetus, growing inside the mother, follows the same spiral pattern, expanding in three directions simultaneously.  The bones and joints are thus formed.

Architects have long used the spiral in construction for its stability and place  saving qualities.  They define space in three axis: length, width and height. These same axis define a spiral.  The balance of energy around these three axis throughout the body provides grace and elegance to our movement, and protects the joints from undue stress.
